Marriage Is the Foundation of the Family

Some cultures claim that the basic unit of society is the state. Others say that it is the individual. The Catholic Church states that the basic unit of society is the family.  If the family is strong and healthy, than the state will be strong and healthy. If the family is strong and healthy, the individuals that it produces will be strong and healthy.
   
If the family is the basic unit of society, then marriage is the foundation of the family. When marriage is strong and healthy, then the family is strong and healthy.

To create an environment that strengthens our society and strengthens the individuals within our society, we need to emphasize family and make sure that families are receiving the support and assistance they need. That means strengthening marriage.
   
This Sunday is World Marriage Day. As part of the liturgy, I will invite couples to stand together and renew their vows to one another. If someone is at Mass and their spouse is not able to be there, I will invite them to stand and to renew their vows to their spouse as well.
