Lion’s Roar

September 2008

LABOR DAY MESSAGE from “Economic Life,” Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church (Washington, DC: USCCB, 2004)   “ The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. Employers contribute to the common good through the services or products they provide and by creating jobs that uphold the dignity and rights of workers—to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to adequate benefits and security in their old age, to the choice of whether to organize and join unions, to the opportunity for legal status for immigrant workers, to private property, and to economic initiative. Workers also have responsibilities—to provide a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay, to treat employers and co-workers with respect, and to carry out their work in ways that contribute to the common good. Workers, employers, and unions should not only advance their own interests, but also work together to advance economic justice and the well-being of all. (#52)

GRANDPARENTS DAY- First Sunday after Labor Day: In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents.   Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. West Virginia Senator Jennings Randolph was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed  legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. (September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the "autumn years" of life. This year’s date is September 7, 2008)

Please consider taking on a ministry of visiting or sending greeting cards to one of our parishioners in a nursing home or care facility. Thank you.

The Growth and Impact of Non-Denominational Christian Megachurches. What's all the buzz? Why are so many people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s drawn to these churches? What does this phenomenon portend for the future of the Christian Church as a whole? On Friday, September 12, 7:30 p.m. Matt Swaim, the producer for the Sonrise Morning Show on Sacred Heart Radio and a graduate Theology student, presents a talk on the phenomenon of the dramatic growth of Non-Denominational and Christian Megachurches. As a Catholic convert from an evangelical Christian church, Matt has a unique perspective on the appeal and approach of these churches. He outlines and analyzes the weekly liturgy and the services provided by these churches. Finally, he looks at the potential impact on the rest of the Christian Church. Please join us for this timely and thought-provoking talk. Refreshments provided. For information, please contact Mark at 513. 631.4644.
